Founded in 1979, The Atlanta Opera is led by its Executive Director Alfred D. Kennedy and its Artistic Director William Fred Scott and has won numerous awards, both nationally and locally, under their leadership.  All Atlanta Opera performances take place at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center, located on the corner of Piedmont Avenue and Ralph McGill Blvd.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs more than 200 times a year, offering a Classical Series, a Pops Series, a Family Concert Series, holiday concerts & special events. During the summer months, the ASO presents a series at Chastain Park Amphitheatre.

Museums/Historical Attractions

The Cyclorama, a painting-in-the-round depicting the 1864 Battle of Atlanta, was originally painted in 1885-1886. It includes three-dimensional figures, sound & light effects, narration & a rotating seating platform. The Cyclorama is located outside of Grant Park near Zoo Atlanta.

Fernbank Museum brings a world of dinosaurs, artifacts, science interactive, shells, wildlife, IMAX films & more to visitors as they learn about the earth's history, the physical universe, the environment & human culture.

Fernbank Museum IMAX Theatre puts viewers inside the "big picture" using state of the art films on a screen stretching five stories high & 72 feet wide.

Fernbank Science Center, Forest & Planetarium is a 150-acre education complex which includes a Science Center, Planetarium & Observatory, a greenhouse & the fernbank Forest, 65-acres of protected woodland with 1-1/2 miles of trails. The Gwinnett History Museum, located in the 1853 Lawrenceville Female Seminary building, features a wide variety of historical & folk artifacts related to the history of Gwinnett County & its people.

At this hands-on museum, children & adults of all ages are invited to look, hear, touch, explore, create & share in an environment of open discovery.

Parks/Recreational Facilities

Bethesda Park is a Gwinnett County Park,  It is home to the Gwinnett Senior Center and also the Little League Recreational Facility for Brookwood Football, Baseball and Soccer and also has Adult leagues for Softball.

This 21-acre site in downtown Atlanta is a legacy from the 1996 Summer Olympic games. The combination of green space & plaza is paved with Olympic bricks & features the Olympic Ring fountain & several sculptures. The park hosts a variety of events throughout the year.

Centennial Olympic Park Drive at Andrew Young International Boulevard.

The 38,000-acre Lake Lanier offers water sports & other outdoor activities galore.  Lake Lanier Islands, an 1,100-acre resort, features a beach & waterpark, lodging, boating, fishing, golf, picnic areas, horseback riding, & more.

The 3,200-acre Stone Mountain Park has many attractions, including a cable car, locomotive, Antebellum Plantation, nature trails, gold course, a beach, a 363-acre lake, "The Great Barn" for kids age 12 & under, & the 1870s town, "Crossroads." Nightly Laser Show and Fire Works through the summer.

East of Atlanta on Highway 78, Stone Mountain

Founded in 1889, Zoo Atlanta has more that 1,000 specimens, representing species of animals from all over the world, living in naturalistic environments. A special area features two rare giant pandas from China. Located in Grant Park 

Also located in the same area is the Cyclorama of the Battle of Atlanta

This large water park features a variety of water adventures, including water slides, speed flumes, wave pool & other water related activities. Daily admission beginning Memorial Day from 10:ooam til 10:00pm. Annual passes are available for purchase as well as daily admission.

Sports/Sports Stadiums and Golf Courses

The Georgia Dome, the world's largest cable-supported dome, offers group tours. The site of Atlanta Falcons home games.

The Ivan Allen Jr. Braves Museum & Hall of Fame, named for the Atlanta mayor who lured the Braves to Atlanta, features memorabilla commemorating legends of the game & key moments in Braves history. Tours of Turner Field offered.

One of the most successful temas in baseball today, the Braves play 81 home games during the regular season, which runs April - September, at Turner Field, a stadium built for the 1996 Summer Olympic games.

Part of the NFC Southern Division, the franchise was awareded to the city in June 1965, with the first regular season game in September 1966.  The team is owned by Authur Blanks. The team plays in the Georgia Dome, August-December.

Gwinnett County has just welcomed the Gwinnett Braves a minor league team of the Atlanta Braves.  The season starts April 17, 2009 and will create a lot of excitement.  They will play in a Brand New stadium located in Buford GA. just off Interstate 85 at Ga. 20.
